Moda Blockheads 4 - Block 19

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

Todays block is Clover by Robin Pickens. Robin is a very talented artist and designs the most beautiful, vibrant floral fabric. Her quilt designs are contemporary and gorgeous as well.

This block is a good opportunity to practice your half square triangles. 16 in each block!

For the 9" block I chose to make the C pieces with my toweling stripe.

The fabrics are pre starched and I have cut the stripe on the diagonal. Having the fabrics starched means you don't need to worry about the bias edges. The fabric is crisp, like paper, and holds a flat shape perfectly. It makes the blocks so easy to stitch.

You can see how the stripes are cut in the adjacent photo.

If you want the stripes radiating out from the centre, as I have, then make sure you sew across the correct diagonal.

The diagonal you need to sew ¼" either side of is the one perpendicular to the direction of the stripe. In other words, your sewing lines will cut across the stripes.

Look carefully at the photo and you will see the stitching lines.

With the 4 ½" block I placed the stripes in section E and F making sure the stripes were cut symmetrically.

Both blocks were cut and assembled following the instructions supplied.

I used Diagonal Seam Tape to sew my diagonals, saving me the time needed to mark the diagonals on the fabric.

Happy sewing
