Today's block is Autumnal by Chelsi Stratton. Chelsi designs pretty fabric with her mum, under the label Sherri and Chelsi.
As you can see I have used a striped toweling in the background of the 4 ½" block and for the leaf stem in the 9" block.
To cut the leaf stem in a stripe, I cut the square so the stripes ran across the diagonal. I made sure one of the stripes was running exactly from corner to corner, so when the stem was finished, the stripe would be exactly in the centre.
For the half square triangle pieces of the small block, I made sure I sewed across the diagonal so the stripes were running in the direction I wanted them to.
It is worth pinning the diagonal and folding the fabric back to check you have the stripes running in the desired direction. This way, all the background stripes run the same way.
For small scale stripes I don't worry about the direction so much, but toweling stripes have a bigger scale, so I think it is worth taking the time to make it right.
All the cutting and assembly instructions were followed as per the instructions.
Happy sewing
Jenelle
