Block 3 - Game Day by Sherri McConnell of My Quilting Life

This is a fun block from Sherri. I think the name is perfect for this one- it's full of joy and looks just like the colour and noise of Game Day to me!

I've known Sherri for a couple of years and she is a lovely human; talented, intelligent, creative and thoughtful. I had the pleasure of being interviewed on her blog last year and she and her son a total pleasure to chat to. This was something quite different to me and she made me feel comfortable and relaxed. This is my Game Day block. I have used fabrics from my Summer Solstice wovens collection.

Remember to starch heavily, prior to cutting out wovens. Once this is done it is like cutting and sewing paper. You can really play with the stripe patterns this way and not worry about fabric moving and stretching.

You can see that I have deliberately cut the blue stripe so all the stripes point out from the centre. I have used the same cutting instructions as the pattern but just carefully considered the direction of the stripe. This can also be done if you are working with a directional print.

For the corner blue blocks I have run the stripes diagonally.

Cut the square the same size as the instructions but have your ruler point to point on the stripes.

Once you have cut one square, use it as a template to cut the remaining squares the same.

This example is on a different fabric so you can see the ruler placement easily.

Remember, these tips are for using stripes in an intentional way. You can just cut the stripes any which way, if you prefer. There are no rules. Maybe you are using prints, so this doesn't apply, but it is good to have some ideas and skills that give you options to try something different.

These tips will work with a directional print too.
