Blockheads 7 Block 2

Block 2 is Twinkle by Amarilys Henderson.

I haven't had the opportunity to meet Amarilys in person yet but I have encountered her amazing mural art. The only time I have played Pickle Ball, was in a Dallas Pickle Ball centre with some other Moda designers and staff. It was great fun. On the wall was one of Amarilys' murals and we took our photo in front of her artwork - she was there in spirit!

You can see the mural on the wall behind us.

So this is the second block for Blockheads 7 and here is my version below, mocked up in Summer Solstice Wovens.

For this block I have just changed the direction of the stripes for each alternate rectangle.

I have placed the darker fabric behind the yellow star for maximum contrast and the lighter fabric in the corners.

All the cutting instructions are the same as the ones you downloaded you just need to change up the stripe direction when you are cutting.

You can see how I have cut the rectangles for the D and E pieces.

To have straight stripes make sure your fabric is starched and line up the edge of your ruler along one of the stripes. Make your first cuts parallel to the stripe. Then when you cross cut, you can line up your ruler on your previously cut edge and your second cut will be perpendicular to the stripes.

You need to cut 4 rectangles of each direction.

For blocks B2 and C you need to use Foundation Paper Piecing.

To keep your stripe straight can be a little tricky.

Firstly, cut the piece of fabric you need bigger than required. This gives you room to play. I often just grab a piece of fabric, uncut, so I can play with the placement of the pattern or stripe. It will be trimmed once I've sewn it onto the foundation.

Place your B2 or C fabric on the paper so your stripes are facing the direction you require and pin it in place. The wrong side of the template will be on the wrong side of the fabric. Then place the A1 fabric on top, right sides together with the fabric, so it overlaps the seam line and sew in place along the dotted line.

Open the fabric out and press. Then trim off the edges level with the paper template.

Remove the paper just prior to sewing the block together.

Sew that's Block 2. I look forward to seeing lots of Twinkle blocks on the Blockheads Group. I hope I see some stripes !

Happy sewing

Jenelle
